Rats
Most rats that live in our area of Northern Illinois is the Norway Rat. They are also called alley rats, city rats, or river rats. They are 7 to 9 inches long, weighing 7 to 18 ounces. They can be identified by their blunt noses, small eyes and small ears. They have poor vision, but an excellent sense of hearing, touch, smell and taste. They are good climbers, swimmers, runners, and jumpers.
Norway Rats are wary by nature and are nocturnal. Outside, they burrow into the ground to create their nests. When inside, they nest in places where they and their offspring will remain hidden and undisturbed. Most adults live for less than a year and reach sexual maturity after only 2 months. Because their gestation period lasts about 23 days and their litters are usually between six to twelve the average female can produce over 100 offspring in her lifetime under ideal conditions and plentiful resources.
Rodents spread disease and there are numerous health and issues connected with them. The damage to structures that rats can do is considerable. They can undermine foundations and can cause fires through their gnawing behavior.
Mice
Mice are notorious for infesting homes and buildings thanks to their ability to slip through the smallest of entry points. Mice should be a concern for any property owner due to their capacity to spread disease and their destructive eating habits.
VexTech technicians are experts in identifying your rodent issue, finding the entry points and nests, eliminating the them and ensuring they do not return.
Voles
Voles are small rodents that grow to 3–9 in, depending on the species. Vole populations can grow very large within a short time. A mating pair can produce a hundred more voles in a year. Voles outwardly resemble several other small animals. Moles, gophers, mice, rats and even shrews have similar characteristics and behavioral tendencies.
Voles often eat succulent root systems and burrow under plants and eat away until the plant is dead. Bulbs are another favorite target for voles. The presence of large numbers of voles is often identifiable only after they have destroyed a number of plants.
The meadow vole, sometimes called the field mouse or meadow mouse is a common species in our area and can cause root damage in lawns and gardens.
